When you loose a tooth you often loose a lot more. Maybe its your natural smile, your ability to eat certain foods or even your confidence. You may also experience pain, muscle strain, headaches and find it difficult to speak clearly. The effects of tooth loss are individual and dependent on exactly what you have lost.
If you have lost the crown, you have lost the visible part of your tooth, however will still be able to have a new artificial crown fixed to your natural root. If you have lost the roots as well, you have also lost the unseen part of your tooth.
A dental implant replaces the natural tooth root to provide support for crowns, bridges or dentures to replace your natural smile.
At Madeley dental practice we use Straumann implants. For more information visit the Straumann website:
This video shows four titanium implants placed into the jaw bone with abutments screwed into the implants. The abutments help to hold a full lower denture firmly in place. This can be achieved with as few as two implants.
Our team of implant dentists and nurses work together to provide you with the best solution for your needs.
Trudie Baker has had extensive training in restorative dentistry and dental implants, both in this country and in America. She has an M.MedSci qualification in dental implantology from the University of Sheffield and takes referrals from both inside and outside the practice.
Dharmesh Mistry graduated from Liverpool University in 2004 and has experience in occlusion , orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry. He has trained in implant and sinus surgery at UCLA in the USA and also takes referals for implant treatment from inside and outside the practice.
The video on the left shows a space where a tooth is missing. Either side of the space the teeth are prepared (cut down) and silicon impressions are taken for a bridge to be made by the laboratory. A dental bridge literally bridges the gap between missing teeth. The bridge in the video is made up of two crowns that fit over the prepared teeth either side of the gap holding a false tooth in the middle. This is fixed into place with dental cement. (the gum does not need to be cut away for this procedure).
The video on the right shows the gum being moved away from the bone and a selected sized hole being made in the jaw bone, a titanium implant is placed in the hole and the gum is sutured. At a later date an abutment is screwed into the implant and a laboratory made crown is fixed in place with dental cement. The teeth either side are not effected by this treatment.
